Ans: The line mentioned in the question tries to explain that , beside being an old man building a bridge alone would require much of physical labour and doing this for the whole day might  even lead to death due to excessive strength loss.

d) What do the expressions ‘chasm ,deep and wide’ and ‘evening tide’ represent with relation to human life?

Ans:  ‘Chasm , deep and wide ‘ represents difficult time  and  ‘evening tide’ represents old age in relation to human life.
