A. 1. Why did the narrator need to employ elephant wagons?
Ans: The narrator needed to employ elephant wagons for transport of heavy machineries uphill.
2. What problems did the elephants and the men face as they travelled through the mountain pass?
Ans: While passing through the mountain pass ,the elephants began to sicken due to continuous exposure to wet and cold, dragging their unmanageable wagons with increasing altitude. The men too suffered hardship with loading and unloading of heavy carts at times when they passed bridges over dangerous chasms or when the wheels sank deep below the metal foundation.
3. Why was the road beyond a certain point impassable?
Ans: With increase in the altitude , the temperature began to fall daily, as a result of which the elephants were sicken ,with minimum strength to pull those heavy machineries. Also the wheels began sinking down the metal foundation ,becoming hopelessly imbedded causing much trouble to the elephants as well as the men. These were the reasons why the road beyond a certain point was impassable.
4. What effect did this have on the elephants?
Ans: The elephants reasoned up that ,there were neither summit to the mountains nor any end to the steep and horrible ascent ,as a result of which they striked their work being heart-broken.
5. In what condition did the narrator find the elephant teams when he went to investigate the situation?
Ans: When the narrator went to investigate the situation he found the elephant teams grazing upon bamboo grass in the thick forest.
6. What did the narrator initially suggest to the elephant drivers? Did it help to improve the situation?
Ans: The narrator suggested the elephant drivers to harness four elephants to a cart intended for only one elephant.
No,it didn’t helped in improving the situation as beside being prodded the elephant’s neck with iron hooks ,not even one elephant exerted themselves to draw the wagons.
7. What was the narrator’s bright idea? How did he think this might help solve the problem?
Ans: The narrators bright idea was to detach the four elephants from the harness and to ride them up to the pass by unchaining them.
The narrator knew that the elephants were heart – broken and so he thought that if they were made aware of the fact that there were hardly two miles for the summit and were supplied with best of the food and shelter for that night ,it would definitely help in solving the problem.
8. What was the result of the narrator’s ‘ruse’?
Ans: The elephants on the following day exerted their full powers and started pulling their loads without any hesitation. An unaccountable communication also occurred between them which gave the elephants general encouragement . Thus , the result of the narrator’s ‘ruse’ was perfect undoubtedly as the elephants at once perceived the situation and as a consequence recovered their lot courage.
B. 1. a) Where were the elephants?
Ans: The elephants were in the middle of the pass almost two miles away from the summit.
b) What had made them conclude that there was ‘ no end to the steep and horrible ascent’?
Ans: Moving continuously above the altitude for nine to ten days in ceaseless wet and cold climate with heavy loads ,made their health weaker ,as a result of which they striked among themselves thinking that they had been doing such effort without any end to the summit and horrible ascent.
c) What was the consequence of this reasoning by the elephants?
Ans: As a result of the situation ,the consequences that took place was that it was impossible to induce the elephants to work.
2. a) Who exerted their power to pull the heavy load up the hill?
Ans: The elephants that went along with the narrator up to the Newera Ellia exerted their power to pull the heavy load up the hill.
b) Why did they do so?
Ans: They ensured within them the belief that there was an end to the summit which was nearly only two miles and recovering their lost courage they did so.
c) What does the narrator mean by ‘their example, or some unaccountable communication between them ‘ encouraged the other elephants?
Ans: By the quoted lines in the question the narrator means that , the elephants that went up along with him to Newera Ellia , upon reaching the following day ,started working by exerting their full power without any hesitation and this served as an example for the other elephants .Even the narrator feels that they had communicated among themselves about the fact that there was hardly two miles left to reach the summit which helped the rest of the elephants in recovering their lost courage.
