Ans: Johnsy and Sue were both friends who were both young artists .They lived at the top of a three storey brick house in Greenwich village  .

2. Why did the doctor say that Johnsy had only one chance in ten of surviving the attack of pneumonia ?

Ans:  Johnsy was determined that her pneumonia would not improve. As a result, her doctor spotted the situation and informed her that she only had a one in ten chance of surviving the pneumonia attack because medicine would not help her if she did not want to live. Her determination to live, though, was the only thing that could heal her.

3. Why was Johnsy counting the leaves on the ivy on the brick wall ?

Ans: Johnsy had decided that she would pass away the day the last leaf dropped from the creeper. She was thus keeping track and counting the leaves on the ivy on the brick wall as they dropped from the creeper.

6. What did Johnsy and Sue see the next morning when they looked out of the window  ?

Ans: The following morning, Johnsy and Sue noticed that one ivy leaf was still growing from the brick wall next to the beating rain and ferocious wind that had continued all night.

B. Read the lines from the story and answer the questions with reference to the context .

1. ‘ I will do all that science , through my efforts ,can  accomplish .But when my patient begins to count the carriages in her funeral procession , I subtract  fifty per cent from the curative power of medicines. ’

(a) Who was the doctor’s patient ? What was she suffering from ?

Ans: Johnsy was the doctor’s patient .

She was suffering from pneumonia .

(b) What did the doctor mean by these words ?

Ans: The doctor indicated that while he would use all of his resources to help Johnsy get better by giving her medicines, he would simultaneously reduce the medicinal effects of those pills by 50% because she had already decided she wasn’t going to get better and therefore couldn’t be helped by those alone.

(c) Had the doctor judged the patient’s state of mind correctly ? How do we know  ?

Ans: Yes , the doctor had  judged the patient’s state of mind correctly.

We could conclude that because , she started  counting the leaves on the ivy on the brick wall and even said that ,she would pass away as the last leaf fell down .

2. Sue pulled the shade down to the windows-sill, and motioned Behrman into the other room . In there they peered out the window fearfully at the ivy vine . Then they looked at each other for a moment without speaking .

(a) Why did Sue and Behrman peer out of the window at the ivy ?

Ans: Sue and Behrman peer out of the window at the ivy to see if the final leaf was still present or not as a steady cold rain was falling mixed with snow .

(b) What do you think they saw ? Why did this make them afraid ?

Ans: They might see that the last leaf had fallen due to the steady cold rain that was falling mixed with snow .

They were afraid because Johnsy’s poor condition would likely worsen if she saw that, and she might die as she had predicted.

(c) What did one of them do to rectify that situation ?

Ans: Behrman made the decision to assist Sue, a friend of hers who was concerned about Johnsy’s reaction to the final leaf falling. He went outside to paint the leaves during the rainy and chilly night, and when he returned, he was soaked to the skin and unable to even take off his wet clothes and shoes. He gave the ultimate sacrifice with his life in order to save another person.

3. ‘ Something has made the last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was . It is a sin to want to die .You may bring me a little broth now and – no , bring me a hand – mirror first ,and I will sit up and watch you cook .’

(a) Who said these words and to whom ?

Ans: Johnsy said the words mentioned in the question to Sue .

(b) Why did the speaker think the last leaf had stayed on the ivy ?

Ans: The speaker thought the last leaf had stayed on the ivy just to make her realise how evil or morally wrong she was in making a prediction to die .

(c) What tells the readers that the speaker was no longer depressed ?

Ans: After realising her mistake, Johnsy first requested Sue to get her some soup, but then she abruptly demanded a mirror and declared she would sit and watch the cooking. She no longer appeared depressed based on this shift in behaviour.

(d) Why had the last leaf  not fallen ?

Ans:  The final leaf didn’t fall because it had already fallen that night, but Behrman once again portrayed it in such a lifelike manner that it was difficult to distinguish it from a painting.
