SUMMARY

The poet Ben Jonson discusses the several characteristics that define a man as noble in his poem “The Noble Nature.” He uses the analogies of a man to a strong oak and a delicate lily to convey his point. It is not necessary for a guy to be physically robust and tough or to live a long life to be considered a noble human. The enormous, sturdy, and old oak will soon decompose into a lifeless, “dry,” and withered log. The same will happen to a man who is just gifted with a long life and material and physical prosperity.
The poet exhorts us to pay attention to the lilies’ vitality. The life of the lily plant is brief. It is quite lovely and blooms in May. Even though a flower only lasts for one day before falling and dying at dusk, for that brief time it brings beauty and joy. According to the poet, a man is noble if he lives a meaningful life, even if it is brief like the life of a lily flower. A man’s life might be perfect even though it is brief. He merely needs to be honourable, which means that he should give to others and be grateful for everything he has. The only life worth living is one like this.
